Helping shape the future
This will be your council and your Council Plan. We are involving you in helping us to shape the future.
The Council Plan
We are drawing up a Council Plan to set out how Westmorland and Furness Council intends to work, and what you can expect from us. It outlines how we plan to make Westmorland and Furness ‘A great place to live, work and thrive now and in the future’.
During the summer of 2022 we asked residents, key partners, businesses and organisations to complete a survey to give us their views on the emerging Westmorland and Furness Council Draft Council Plan (PDF 5.9MB / 12 pages).
Accessible version of the Draft Council Plan: Westmorland and Furness Draft Council Plan Accessible (PDF 123KB / 7 pages).
Paper versions of the plan and survey were available to pick-up from main libraries in Alston, Barrow, Kendal and Penrith. On-line conversationsabout the Council Plan were held with community groups, businesses and the public and drop-in events were arranged in supermarkets and community buildings where people could provide feedback.
Thank you to everyone who has commented on the plan so far. We will continue to engage with you as we refine and develop the plan.
Priorities in the draft plan so far include:
- addressing health and social inequalities
- measures to tackle climate change
- highways and transport
- empowering and working with communities
- children’s care
- the economy and housing
Building the new Westmorland and Furness Council is a once-in-a-generation chance to:
- transform the way we work
- ensure our communities are at the heart of everything we do
- deliver excellent services
- create efficiencies from more joined-up working
We will continue to engage with you as we refine and develop the plan.
Our Council Plan will provide the structure for our vision, our values and our priorities.
The plan will provide a sense of the direction we are heading in and the positive impact we can make for our communities.
Your feedback will inform the Council Plan vision, values and priorities that will be finalised in October 2022.
At this stage it can’t include everything that the new council will be doing over the next few years, that will come with the development of detailed strategies that deliver the vision and priorities.
We will continue to engage with our residents, businesses and organisations during the first full year of the new council after ‘Vesting Day’ on 1 April 2023.
