Status: Constructed
Funding: £886,000 from Active Travel Fund 2 (ATF2)
Policy Framework: Barrow-in-Furness Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP)
Project description
Our scheme on Bridge Road and Michaelson Road, Barrow-in-Furness is the first phase of transformation across the town to make it easier to travel actively. Our aim for these measures is to improve travel connections for people who choose to walk, wheel or cycle.
We've introduced approximately 1.5km of cycle infrastructure in the area. We've also improved facilities for pedestrians, including:
- enhancing the existing pedestrian crossing on Michaelson Road
- adding a new pedestrian crossing (with signals) on Bridge Road
- building a speed hump at the Farm Street junction, calming traffic and creating a safe crossing point
Timescales
The scheme opened in autumn 2022. We carried out further improvements in winter 2022.
Consultation and engagement
We carried out a public consultation on the emerging scheme proposals, between 7 May and 28 May 2021.
Monitoring and evaluation
We monitored cycle traffic in the area and nearby roads. We counted for a seven-day period in October 2021 (before the scheme was built) and in October 2023 (one year afterwards).
Our monitoring shows that the scheme has had a positive impact on the number of cyclists using the route. For example:
- the number of cyclists on Michaelson Road, on increased by 57% on average over the seven days. This equates to an extra 70 cyclists on average, per day
- there was a reduction in the number of cyclists using the footways on Michaelson Road
- the number of cyclists on Bridge Road increased by 27% over the seven days on average. This equates to an extra 28 cyclists on average, per day
