Duke Street, Barrow-in-Furness

We’re developing a scheme to create an active travel route connecting the train station, town centre and onwards.

Status: Preliminary design
Funding: Active Travel Fund 4 (ATF4)
Policy Framework: Barrow-in-Furness Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP)

Project description

The LCWIP has identified Duke Street as a priority link between Ramsden Square and Schneider Square.

The Duke Street route will connect to the following active travel schemes:

  • Abbey Road, due to be constructed in 2025
  • Michaelson Road and Bridge Road, constructed in 2022

Duke Street is a missing link in what will otherwise be a continuous network of infrastructure in the area. The route, once built, will connect from the train station, through the town centre and beyond to North Walney.

We received funding from the government's Active Travel Fund 4 in 2023, to develop designs to a preliminary level. We've not yet secured funding to construct the scheme.

Timescales

We expect to complete the preliminary design in summer 2025.
