Kirkby Stephen - Household Waste Recycling Centre

This is one of the smaller Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC's) and take a more limited range of items.

Check our other HWRC's for those which take items such as asbestos, car tyres, plasterboard or upholstered seating.

We don't take cans, plastic or glass bottles and jars on site, but there is a recycling bank nearby that does.

Items we will take

• Car batteries
• Household batteries
• chemicals such as weedkiller, paint stripper or oil based paint (on arrival report to the site staff with these items)
• clothes and textiles
• cardboard
• fluorescent tubes
• fridges and freezers
• furniture (but not upholstered seating), wooden furniture, mattresses, carpets and rugs
• garden waste
• gas bottles
• general household waste
• hardcore and rubble
• large appliances such as washing machines and ovens
• emulsion paint and dry empty metal paint cans, oil based paints need to be reported to staff and stored with chemicals
• paper
• scrap metal
• small appliances such as microwaves, toasters, vacuum cleaners or battery powered toys
• TV's and monitors
• used engine oil
• wood and timber

• asbestos
• trade waste
• clinical wastes
• acetylene
• boat flares
• car air bags
• fireworks
• plasterboard and gypsum products
• tyres
• upholstered furniture

HWRC permits

Our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) are only for local residents to use. The permit scheme helps to prevent trade waste being deposited at our sites.

If you are driving a larger vehicle such as a van or utility vehicle or use a large double axle trailer you will need to apply for a HWRC Permit.

If you're walking to one of our sites you'll need a pedestrian's permit so we can keep you safe.
