Operators may have different tariffs and payment apps, so always check in advance.

On-street charging

If you have an electic vehicle and use on-street parking, you must not trail charging cables across the pavement, under Section 162 of the Highways Act. We have the authority to remove unauthorised cables.

It's not always possible to install on-street charging infrastructure at some locations. For example, the area might have narrow pavements or have issues with electrical grid availability. In these areas, we're looking to install charging points in nearby council public car parks or community hubs.

We're working with public sector organisations and community groups to find sites for chargepoints. We'll install them in locations that benefit both residents and visitors.

For example, we're going to prioritise areas with limited or no off-street parking when we begin to install EV chargepoint bollards in summer 2025/26

You can find more information about our plans to improve access to EV charging in our electric vehicle infrastructure strategy.

Off-street charging

If you have a driveway or garage, you do not usually need planning permission to install a home chargepoint. However, this is not the case if your property is a listed building.

The average cost to install a home charge point is £800 to £1,500. However this figure can vary depending on factors such as:

  • the distance from your electricity supply to the chargepoint location
  • whether you need to upgrade your home's electrical system

Many new electrical vehicles come with a home chargepoint included as part of the package.

Workplace and business charging

The government supports businesses to move to electric vehicles by:

  • offering grants towards buying and installing EV chargepoints and infrastructure at eligible places of work
  • providing grants for new EVs for business use
  • offering lower benefit in kind compared to petrol and diesel vehicles. Find out more about company electric car taxes
