For Householders

A Householder is someone with a spare room who would benefit from companionship, practical support and the reassurance of having someone else living in their home.

Through Homeshare, Householders are carefully matched with a Homesharer who provides agreed support in exchange for affordable accommodation.

Homeshare helps people remain independent in their own homes while benefiting from companionship and practical help with everyday life.

Benefits of Homeshare

Companionship and social connection

Many Householders value having someone to share everyday life with.

Homeshare can help reduce loneliness and isolation by providing:

  • regular conversation and companionship
  • shared meals and social interaction
  • a greater sense of connection and community
  • reassurance during evenings and winter months

Independent living

Homeshare can help people remain living independently in their own homes for longer.

Benefits include:

  • practical support with everyday tasks
  • help to maintain independence
  • continued access to familiar surroundings and local communities
  • reduced reliance on family and friends for day-to-day support

Practical support

Homesharers usually provide around 10 hours of agreed support each week.

This may include:

  • shopping
  • light housework
  • cooking
  • gardening
  • collecting prescriptions
  • help using technology
  • company on walks and outings

Homesharers do not provide personal care or medical support.

Reassurance and peace of mind

Having someone living in the home can provide reassurance for both Householders and their families.

This may include:

  • knowing someone is nearby overnight
  • support in an emergency
  • feeling less anxious about living alone
  • greater peace of mind for family members

Safety and support

The Homeshare team carefully manages every match.

We:

  • complete DBS and reference checks
  • assess the suitability of the home
  • match people based on their needs, interests and lifestyles
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring

This makes Homeshare a safer and more structured alternative to informal lodging arrangements.

Agreements and expectations

Every Homeshare arrangement is supported by a written agreement.

This sets out:

  • the support to be provided
  • expectations and responsibilities
  • review arrangements
  • notice periods

If circumstances change, the Homeshare team can help review and adjust the arrangement.

Community connections

Homeshare brings people from different generations together.

Many Householders enjoy:

  • sharing experiences and life stories
  • learning new skills and technologies
  • developing meaningful friendships
  • building stronger community connections
