There is still time for young bookworms across Westmorland and Furness to dive into their next story and complete this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
So far, a total of 1,740 children have taken on the challenge to read six books this Summer, and it is still not too late to join in.
With the school holidays drawing to a close, the Council’s Library Service is encouraging children to finish their books by Saturday 13 September to claim their medal and certificate, along with a chance to win some fantastic prizes donated by The Cumberland Building Society and Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon Ltd.
Those that complete the challenge will be entered into a prize draw for a selection of prizes including a one-year family membership to the National Trust, a magazine subscription for one year, and a one day family adventure pass.
A primary school in Eden, Furness and South Lakes will also receive a special bundle of books for their library. The school in each area with the highest number of pupils completing the challenge will be named the area winner.
This year’s theme, Story Garden, has inspired a whole host of creative activities in local libraries. From crafting sessions to story times, there’s plenty to enjoy while you work towards your reading goal.
Councillor Helen Chaffey, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Customer Services, Culture and Communications, said:
"The Summer Reading Challenge is such a wonderful way to keep children engaged with books during the long summer break. It’s been fantastic to see so many young people across Westmorland and Furness already taking part, and there’s still time for more to join in or complete their six books before the deadline.
“Reading for pleasure is one of the most important habits we can encourage in our children, and this challenge makes it fun and rewarding. I’d encourage every child to take part, whether you’re just starting or on your final book, and enjoy the chance to celebrate your achievement with a medal, certificate, and perhaps even a prize."
To sign up before the closing date, visit your nearest library to register, pick your books, and start reading. You can also take part online via the Summer Reading Challenge website.
Older children and their families can get involved too through the Road to Reading challenge. More details are available at your local library or on the Reading Agency website.
