School Streets

Find out how we're improving road safety and encouraging active travel by temporarily restricting traffic outside schools at drop-off and pick-up times.

Status: Various
Funding: Active Travel Fund 4 Extension (ATF4E)
Policy Framework: Cumbria Transport Infrastructure Plan (CTIP)

Project description

School Streets in a national initiative that introduces restrictions on motorised road traffic outside schools.

Roads covered by School Street restrictions become zones for:

  • walking
  • wheeling
  • scooting
  • cycling

Traffic is restricted for up to an hour at school drop-off and pick-up times in the morning and afternoons, during term time.

Local residents and emergency vehicles are exempt from the restriction.

We trial School Street schemes first, by implementing Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders.

If the restrictions are successful, we will put a permanent Traffic Regulation Order in place.

In 2023, we were awarded funding through the government's ATF4E to establish School Streets. The funding was for up to three schools located within our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans.
