Section 19 Policy under the Education Act 1996

How we ensure that children who are unable to attend school have access to appropriate, high-quality education that meets their needs.

We have a duty to provide alternative provision to children who cannot attend school. Without this alternative provision, the children would not receive a suitable education.

This includes children who have:

  • been permanently excluded
  • medical conditions
  • education needs that cannot be met within a school setting

You can find guidance, policies and procedures in our Section 19 Policy under the Education Act 1996 (PDF , 443KB)

This applies to all children who:

  • are of compulsory school age
  • live in the Westmorland and Furness area
  • are on the school register, or not on the register
  • attend any type of school
