A new heating solution will soon be in place at Ulverston Market Hall as part of Westmorland and Furness Council’s commitment to maintaining buildings and supporting the local economy in the town.

A temporary boiler was installed last winter so that the market hall could remain operational, and works are now due to begin on Monday 5 October to replace this system with an array of efficient, ultra-low emission, gas condensing boilers. The upgrades will lead to a warmer, more comfortable environment for stall holders and shoppers this winter.

The programme of works is anticipated to take up to eight weeks and has been designed to keep disruption to a minimum. Most activities will be undertaken outside market trading hours and within an isolated work area.  A brief heating interruption will be required during the switchover.

The heating replacement works mark the first phase of significant investment planned for Ulverston Market Hall.  Further works will follow to deliver roof repairs, external wall upgrades and security measures being undertaken, as well as improvements to internal areas, including full decoration, the addition of steel windows, remedial works, electrical upgrades and the installation of a changing places toilet.

The Council are in the final stages of planning the work and will be in touch with Traders in Ulverston Market in coming weeks.

In addition, investment continues in The Coro during October involving essential electrical upgrades and maintenance.  Every effort has been made to minimise disruption to customers of the Coro and the Library, however some work requires the building to be closed to the public on Wednesday 14 October and Thursday 22 October.

Cllr Andrew Jarvis, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said:

“Ulverston Market Hall is an important building at the heart of the town, supporting local businesses, attracting visitors and contributing to the vitality of the local economy. Investing in essential improvements such as the new heating system helps ensure the market hall remains a welcoming, comfortable and thriving place for traders, shoppers and the wider community for years to come.

“This investment reflects our commitment to maintaining and improving our key public buildings, preserving important community assets while making them more efficient, resilient and fit for the future. We would like to thank traders, customers and local residents for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out.”
