Council tribute for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day

Together, we remember written alongside red poppies

Westmorland and Furness Council is displaying poppies and illuminating key buildings to mark Remembrance Sunday (8 November) and Armistice Day (11 November).

A special ‘Together, we remember’ poppy design is being displayed on council buildings, libraries, care homes and vehicles across Westmorland and Furness as a mark of remembrance and support for the Armed Forces community.

From dusk on Friday 6 November until the morning of Thursday 12 November, the clocks at Barrow Town Hall and Kendal Town Hall, along with the front of Voreda House in Penrith, will be illuminated red in tribute to those who have lost their lives in times of conflict.

The Mayor's balcony at Barrow Town Hall has been adorned with around 5,000 knitted and crocheted poppies, created by former Mayoress of Barrow Liz Chatfield and an army of local crafting enthusiasts.

The handmade display has been installed on the outside of the balcony and will remain in place throughout the Remembrance period.

As part of the council's tribute, the Union Flag will be flown from Barrow Town Hall, Kendal Town Hall and Voreda House in Penrith on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

Cllr Vicky Hughes, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Active Wellbeing and the Armed Forces, said:

"Remembrance is a time for us all to come together to honour the courage and sacrifices of our Armed Forces community. It is an opportunity to reflect on their bravery, remember those we have lost and show our support for those who serve and their families. Their dedication, service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Several commemorative events and services will take place across Westmorland and Furness, providing opportunities for communities to come together in remembrance and pay their respects.

Westmorland and Furness Council is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating its commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans and their families, and ensuring they are recognised, treated fairly and able to access the services they need.
