Repair works at Thorncliffe Crematorium in Barrow are progressing well.
The crematorium suffered significant damage in a fire in March.
Following the fire, investigations were carried to understand the extent of the damage, carry out structural and electrical surveys and an extensive clean-up of the site was completed.
Some initial repair work started in May and more extensive structural repairs, including the replacement of the roof and chimneys, began at the end of June.
The cremators have been out of action since the fire, but some chapel‑based services were able to resume in April following the clean-up, allowing families to hold ceremonies already booked at Thorncliffe as planned, but due to the nature of main repairs no services have been possible since early July.
Internal redecoration and painting works have now been completed across various areas of the building, helping to restore the crematorium environment for families and visitors. Roof repair works are also advancing well, with contractors continuing to make good progress on the replacement and restoration of the structure.
Alongside the essential fire damage repairs, Westmorland and Furness Council, which operates the crematorium, is taking the opportunity to invest in the future of the facility by upgrading the cremators and associated equipment. These improvements will provide a more modern, resilient and efficient operation, helping to secure the long-term future of Thorncliffe Crematorium and ensuring it continues to meet the needs of local communities for many years to come.
A council spokesperson said: “The repair project involves a complex programme of work due to the scale of the damage and the specialist nature of the equipment being installed.
“The progress made to date is encouraging. The council continues to work closely with contractors and key partners to deliver the repairs and improvements safely and efficiently, so we can resume services and cremations as soon as possible and this is anticipated to be late September. Once confirmed, we will provide further updates.’’
The council has continued to update funeral directors to help support affected families and wishes to thank people for their continued patience and understanding during this difficult period of disruption.
