Ferry to be out of service for one more day than planned

The Windermere ferry will be out of service for one more day than planned for essential maintenance work being carried out at the moment.

The Mallard went out of service on Monday 23 February for two weeks for maintenance work to extend its working life and improve reliability.

Originally due back in service on Monday 9 March, the return is now scheduled for a day later on Tuesday 10 March.

This is due to delays in manufacturing the bespoke parts for the driveline system.

The suspension is part of planned works to replace and upgrade parts of the driveline system, which have been running almost continually for more than 30 years.

Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and ICT, Cllr Peter Thornton said: “We appreciate ferry users' patience during this period of planned maintenance. The slight delay stems from the bespoke nature of the parts needed but we hope the ferry will be running again on Tuesday.”

During the closure, road users are encouraged to follow the alternative route via the A591 to Ambleside then on to B5286 to Hawkshead.
