Have your say on Morland Neighbourhood Plan

The centre of Morland.

Westmorland and Furness Council is inviting comments on the Morland Neighbourhood Plan.

Neighbourhood planning gives communities direct power to develop a shared vision for their neighbourhood and shape the development and growth of their local area. A neighbourhood plan ultimately forms part of the Development Plan – policies which local authorities use to determine planning applications.

Morland Parish Council has developed the plan and has a vision to "ensure that Morland maintains and enhances its historic character, with particular reference to its Village Character Area, and provides sustainable development to meet the needs of its community."

The plan's objectives are to:

  •  Ensure that all new development, through design and use of materials, respects and enhances the traditional character of the parish, particularly the village character;
  • Protect and maintain open spaces within and on the edges of the village which are an essential part of the character of the parish;
  • Manage future housing development in Morland Parish to levels of development that meet local needs and support the community, while enhancing the character of the parish, and
  • Maintain existing employment operations/businesses and encourage new ones appropriate to the character of the parish in order to maintain existing services.

A six-week consultation period started on Wednesday 21 October for comments. The consultation period closes on Wednesday 2 December 2026.

Councillor Vicky Hughes, Cabinet Member for Planning and Active Well Being, said: "Developing a Neighbourhood Plan is a significant undertaking but can be a powerful way for communities to directly influence how they develop.

“I would encourage anybody who has a view on the Morland Neighbourhood Plan to have their say."
