There are no scheduled local government elections due to take place in Westmorland and Furness in May of this year.

However, notices of election have now been published for the Hawcoat and Newbarns ward of Westmorland and Furness Council and the Hawcoat ward of Barrow Town Council following the resignation of Cllr Niyall Phillips.

Assuming there is more than one candidate for each, by-elections for the Hawcoat and Newbarns ward for Westmorland and Furness Council and the Hawcoat ward for Barrow Town Council will be held on Thursday 4 June 2026.

The next scheduled local government elections for all Westmorland and Furness Council wards are due in May 2027.

In the lead up to elections occurring in other areas of the country on Thursday 7 May, you may see news reports about local elections or content from political parties encouraging people to vote. This is due to other council areas that are holding their scheduled elections on this day.
