People who are passionate about their local community and want to make a real difference to local people's lives are being encouraged to consider becoming a councillor.
Westmorland and Furness Council is calling on residents from all backgrounds, ages, professions and walks of life to find out more about standing for election and representing their communities.
Linda Jones, The Council’s Director of Law and Governance, said:
“Councillors play a vital role in shaping local services, influencing decisions and championing the needs of residents. Whether serving on a town or parish council or as a councillor on Westmorland and Furness Council, elected members help improve the quality of life in the places they represent.
“Importantly, no previous experience or special qualifications are needed to become a councillor. The role offers opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence, gain valuable experience and have a direct impact on local issues.”
To help prospective candidates learn more, two free online drop-in session will be held on Microsoft Teams on Thursday 22 October from 7pm to 8.30pm and on Thursday 12 November between 7pm and 8.30pm. The events will provide information about the role of a councillor, the election process and what to expect if elected, as well as offering attendees the chance to ask questions.
There are many different ways to serve. Town and parish councillors focus on local facilities, community projects and neighbourhood priorities, while councillors on Westmorland and Furness Council help make decisions about major services such as education, highways, planning and adult social care across a wider area.
Anyone interested in standing for election must be at least 18 years old, meet the relevant eligibility requirements and complete the nomination process. Candidates can choose to stand on behalf of a political party or as an independent candidate.
