Members of the public are being asked for their views on a proposal to introduce two new zebra crossings on Springfield Road in Ulverston, aimed at improving safety for pedestrians, particularly school children, families and residents.
Westmorland and Furness Council has developed the proposals in response to requests from ward councillors, Ulverston Town Council, schools, and the wider community.
Springfield Road serves Ulverston Victoria High School, St Mary's Catholic Primary School and Sandside Lodge School, all located close together. An independent engineering safety study identified a lack of safe crossing points along the route, highlighting the need for improved pedestrian facilities.
The proposed scheme includes a zebra crossing near St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and a second zebra crossing just north of the junction to Springfield Park Road. To safely accommodate the crossings, some adjustments to existing parking and ‘no waiting’ restrictions are required near the crossing points. These changes are necessary to maintain visibility and ensure pedestrian safety.
A statutory consultation on the proposals is now open and runs until Friday 29 May.
A spokesperson for Westmorland and Furness Council said: "We have listened to what the community has told us about this road and the need for better arrangements, and the proposed zebra crossings will enhance safety for schoolchildren, their families and the wider public.
"The statutory consultation is a necessary part of the process, and I would urge anybody with an interest to let us know what they think."
