Peel Gill Bridge on the B5305 will be closed to all vehicular traffic from Monday (26 October) for a period of up to three weeks to allow essential stonework repairs to be carried out to the arch barrels of the bridge.
The works on the bridge, between Unthank and Sebergham, require the placement of site vehicles, bridge access equipment (including an underbridge unit), masonry materials and mixing equipment on the bridge. This means there will not be enough room to allow traffic through safely.
Access for pedestrians, dismounted cyclists, and emergency vehicles will be maintained during the closure.
A signed diversion route will be in place via the A595, Carlisle Southern Bypass, A6, C3012 and the unrestricted sections of the B5305.
Councillor Peter Thornton, Cabinet Member for Highways and ICT, said: "We recognise that these works will cause some inconvenience to road users and local residents. However, these measures are necessary to ensure the safety of the workforce, bridge users, and the travelling public while these essential repairs are undertaken.
"Our priority remains the safety of the public, contractors, and staff as we continue to maintain and protect our bridge assets and the wider highway network."
