Repair and improvement works at Thorncliffe Crematorium in Barrow are nearing completion, with the facility now scheduled to reopen on 30 September 2026, following significant damage caused by a fire earlier this year.
Following the fire in March, extensive investigations, structural and electrical surveys, and a comprehensive site clean-up programme were undertaken. Since then, a substantial programme of repairs has been carried out, including roof and chimney replacement works, internal restoration and redecoration, and the installation of upgraded cremation equipment.
As part of the recovery project, Westmorland and Furness Council has also invested in the long-term future of the crematorium through the upgrade of cremators and associated systems. These improvements will help provide a more modern, resilient and efficient service for local communities.
A council spokesperson said: "We are pleased to confirm that Thorncliffe Crematorium is scheduled to reopen on 30 September 2026 and, based on progress to date, we do not currently foresee any further delays to the programme.
“This has been a complex project involving extensive repairs and the installation of specialist equipment. We continue to work closely with our contractors and specialist suppliers to proactively manage and reduce any remaining risks, ensuring the final stages of the project are completed safely and efficiently.
“We are now entering the final stages of the project and are pleased to be approaching the reopening of Thorncliffe Crematorium. We are grateful for the patience and understanding shown by funeral directors, bereaved families and the wider community throughout this period of disruption while these essential repairs and improvements have been carried out, and we look forward to welcoming families back later this month.’’
The council has maintained regular communication with funeral directors throughout the closure period and has already confirmed arrangements for the resumption of services from 30 September.
