Area Locality Boards and Community Development Teams

Find out what our Area Locality Boards do and how to contact your local Community Development Team.

Area Locality Boards

Locality Boards promote close working with our communities. They’re made up of the councillors that have been elected in each area.

Westmorland and Furness Council has three Boards:

The Locality Boards are based on the geographical areas of the former district councils.

The role of Locality Boards

Locality Boards influence and engage with matters which affect our locality. They have some decision-making powers and budgets.

Locality Boards have a range of responsibilities and roles. For example, they:

  • create partnerships between public, private and voluntary sectors, bringing together different interest groups
  • understand and influence council services delivery to ensure this reflects local need
  • award funding and grants to support locality working, projects and activities
  • support the delivery of our highways service

Locality Board priorities

At the start of their four-year term, councillors agree the Locality Board priorities. Based on vital feedback from Council services, these shape how we serve our community.

Each Board has a Locality Plan, based on local issues and opportunities. You can find the priorities for your area in the Locality Board links at the top of this page.

The Locality Plans support our vision, priorities and values, which can be found in our Council Plan.

Community development teams

Each area team works with the Locality Board, parish and town councils, partnerships and communities in their area. We give advice, support engagement activities and look after the Community Fund
