Improving biodiversity in schools

We are working with National Education Nature Park and the Morecambe Bay Partnership to improve the biodiversity on our school grounds.

We are working with schools across the area to help improve biodiversity on school grounds and create richer, more nature-friendly learning environments. Schools play an important role in supporting local wildlife and connecting children and young people with nature. Through this project, schools will be supported to understand the biodiversity already present on their sites, identify opportunities for enhancement, and develop actions that are tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. The project also aims to improve access to nature, support wellbeing, and encourage outdoor learning opportunities.

Our long-term ambition is to build a network of schools that are confident and equipped to take action for nature. Working with partners, including the National Education Nature Park programme, we will help schools access resources, funding opportunities, biodiversity surveying support, and practical guidance to transform outdoor spaces for the benefit of both wildlife and students. By embedding nature into school culture, learning and decision-making, we hope to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards while contributing to wider local biodiversity, nature recovery and climate goals across Westmorland and Furness.
