Find a public toilet

Toilets you can use in our area as well as how to join our community toilet scheme.

There are public toilets throughout our area run by us, parish and town councils and other organisations. Some businesses, shops, restaurants and pubs have also opened their toilets to the public through a courtesy scheme.

You can find a public toilet using the information below or by searching on the Great British public toilet map

The Great British public toilet map shows the following  information:

  • addresses and directions
  • opening hours
  • facilities - such as RADAR key entry, baby changing facilities and accessibility
  • if the toilet is free to use and if not, how much you will need to pay

Accessible toilets

To find Changing Places toilets with equipment for those with limited mobility, visit the Changing Places website

For some wheelchair accessible toilets you'll need a National Keys Scheme (NKS) key. The scheme is managed by Disability Rights UK and helps ensure people with a disability have 24-hour access to public toilets. You can buy an NKS key for a small cost on the Disability Rights UK website.

Kendal courtesy toilet scheme

The scheme offers clean, safe and accessible toilets across Kendal town centre. Businesses in the scheme offer their toilets to the public during their normal opening hours.

Many toilets in the scheme are wheelchair accessible. Baby changing facilities and Changing Places toilets are also available.

Find toilets in the scheme on the Visit Kendal website

This scheme currently applies to Kendal. If you're interested in establishing a scheme in your town or village, please contact us.

How the scheme works

This scheme encourages local businesses, pubs, restaurants and shops to make their toilets available to the public.

Premises accepted onto the scheme once established may be eligible for a grant up to £550.

We consider applications based on the premises and their:

  • location
  • opening times
  • number of toilets
  • standard of upkeep

If you're interested in joining the scheme, or establishing one in your own town or village, please email us. To establish a scheme, there would need to be a minimum number of businesses on board. This depends on the size of the town or village.
