For the first time since lockdown, the much-loved Christmas display at Barrow Park’s glasshouse has returned.
The Parks Team at Westmorland and Furness Council have bedecked the heated greenhouse with four decorated Christmas trees surrounded by a bed of scarlet poinsettias, garlands and twinkling fairy lights.
The show glasshouse in the 45-acre, Thomas Mawson-designed park hosts floral displays all year round but this is the first time it has staged a yuletide display since before Covid.
Councillor Virginia Taylor, the council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said: “Anybody looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the countdown to Christmas can discover an oasis of peace at Barrow Park.
“Our talented and creative Parks Team have created a beautiful display that captures the colours of Christmas. Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer even puts in an appearance. I hope lots of people will take the opportunity to visit the glasshouse over the next couple of weeks and enjoy some quiet moments among all the busy-ness of the festive season.”
Cllr Taylor added: “This Christmas display is the icing on the cake of a wonderful year for horticulture in Barrow, after winning a silver award at this year’s Cumbria in Bloom for Pride in Your Community. Part of the award-winning entry was an avenue of 15 flowering cherry trees at Barrow Park and this will give us all something to look forward to in spring when the blossom is out.

Barrow Park can be accessed from Abbey Road, Park Drive, Park Avenue and Greengate Street in Barrow and is the perfect place to take a stroll at any time of year. The glasshouse is open daily from 10am to 5pm (closed Christmas Day).
