Final refurbishment works on Barrow’s iconic Jubilee Bridge will start on Monday 13 November with minimal disruption for road users.
The major improvement programme is planned to come to an end in March 2024 following 1,000 successful repairs to the steelwork, waterproofing of the bridge deck and re-painting of the structure.
Paint work on the remaining section will start next week, requiring the southern footway to be closed, however the northern footway will remain open to pedestrians and traffic flow will not be restricted.
The southern footway will then reopen in early January 2024 while the works are mirrored on the northern footway.
An initial closure of one traffic lane will be in place for up to three days from Monday (13 November) for the team to safety erect a scaffolding structure before the paint work begins.
To minimise disruption, the section of road will be closed between 9.15am and 2.45pm. Traffic management will be onsite to monitor the flow of traffic and respond to any required assistance.
During the refurbishment period, the 350-metre-long bridge will remain open to traffic.
As with the previous phases of the programme, renovations will be carried out by Westmorland and Furness Council’s local contractor, Story Contracting.

“As a result of community-focused, collaborative planning with Story Contacting, road users will face minimal disruption during the work period as the bridge will remain open to traffic and pedestrians.
“Carrying up to 24,000 vehicles daily and as the only mainland crossing from Barrow to Walney Island, we recognise the importance of this integral transport link and the history it holds for the local area.
“These extensive repairs have futureproofed the bridge and ensured it will remain safe and functional for the future.”
