Up to 3,300 Westmorland and Furness residents have been randomly selected to share their views on local highways and transport services as part of a national survey.
As a part of the National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction survey, people can share their views on a wide range of topics from the condition of roads and footpaths to the quality of cycling facilities.
Answers will be compared with the views of other members of the public across England and Scotland.
Westmorland and Furness Council is one of 111 Local Authorities to sign up to a standardised survey that will ask members of the public exactly the same questions, whether they live in the areas of Barrow, Eden or South Lakeland.
The survey, which is being run for the 18th year, is the largest collaboration between Local Authorities offering the opportunity to compare results, share in best practice and identify further opportunities to work together in the future.
The questionnaire will be sent to a minimum random sample of at least 3300 of Westmorland and Furness residents from 6 June, followed by a reminder, with local and national results to be published in late-October 2025. Since the survey is based on a sample, residents that receive a copy are being urged to take part.
Residents that receive the questionnaire can complete the survey online if they prefer, a short URL link will be printed on the front of the questionnaire and they will be required to enter a code before completing the questionnaire.
Confirmed for 2025/26, the Council’s multi-million pound investment will deliver significant upgrades to transport infrastructure and tackle the challenges of ‘pothole season,’ brought on in Spring by increased traffic and the impact of winter weather.
Councillors have supported the area's spending plan that includes £19.9 million earmarked for improving carriageway surfaces. A further £17.8 million will see other vital upgrades, repairs and maintenance delivered on bridges and structures, footway resurfacing, public rights of way, drainage, streetlighting, traffic signals, and road safety.
The results will enable the council to find out what people in your area think about these important services and assess how it is performing. It also gives the public an opportunity to say which highways services they think the Council should prioritise and improve in the 2026/27 investment programme.
Councillor Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and ICT said: “As the Cabinet member responsible for highways I’m really pleased that we are taking part in this survey to find out what you think about our roads and pavements
“This public survey will be invaluable in shaping our highways programme and to make sure that we are directing our spending to the areas you want to see us improving.
“It will enable us to listen to our residents and work together to deliver good highways across Westmorland and Furness."
