Westmorland and Furness Council has joined the congratulations to Barrow-born Lioness Georgia Stanway after she won her second European Women's Championship winners’ medal with the England team on Sunday.
The 26-year-old, who plays for Bayern Munich, made her 84th appearance for the Lionesses in the final against Spain and started every match in the Euros in Switzerland.
Yesterday the victorious Lionesses were welcomed to Downing Street and this afternoon tens of thousands of fans celebrated their success in a victory parade in London.
Now the council is considering how Georgia’s inspirational sporting success can be permanently honoured in her hometown.
Helen Chaffey, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “The whole of Westmorland and Furness council congratulates Georgia on her and the Lionesses’ stunning achievement.
“Georgia is a fantastic role model for women and girls and a wonderful ambassador for the town of Barrow and the wider area and deserves to take her place in Barrow sporting folklore along with former Liverpool and England captain Emlyn Hughes.
“The council, with Barrow Town Council and others, will be actively looking at how to mark Georgia’s personal success in the town, and also how we can use this moment to further support and promote junior football and girls football in Barrow and the whole of Westmorland and Furness.”
Georgia, a former pupil of Victoria Junior School in Barrow and Dowdales School in Dalton, played for Furness Rovers in the boys’ teams until the age of 13, before joining the youth team at Blackburn Rovers.
She joined Manchester City in 2015, winning Women’s Super League, FA Cup and League Cup medals, before joining Bayern Munich in 2022 and winning three consecutive women’s Bundesliga titles.
In her England career, Georgia has scored 24 goals, including a memorable winning goal in the Euro 2022 quarter-final against Spain.
