Westmorland and Furness Council will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on 15 August by flying the VJ Day flag in Barrow, Kendal and Penrith.
The flags will be flown from the town hall buildings to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East during the Second World War and to recognise the ongoing contributions of the Armed Forces community.
VJ Day commemorates Japan’s surrender on 15 August 1945, which brought the Second World War to an end.
A series of events will take place to mark the occasion; all are welcome to attend and show their support.
- Barrow – a VJ Day Service of Thanksgiving will take place at St James’ Church in Barrow at 6.00pm on Friday 15 August, organised by Barrow Town Council.
- Kendal – on Friday 15 August, Westmorland and Furness Council will be raising the VJ Day flag at Kendal Town Hall at 10.00am. Light refreshments will be served in the Town Council Chamber from 9.30am-10.30am.
- Penrith – Westmorland and Furness Council will raise the VJ Day flag outside the town hall building in Penrith at 10.00am on Friday 15 August. Light refreshments will be provided afterwards at Penrith Methodist Church until noon.
The council is proud to be a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that those who serve, or have served, and their families are treated fairly and not disadvantaged by their service.
