Westmorland and Furness Council has opened applications for a number of new apprenticeships, offering fantastic opportunities for individuals to kickstart their careers in local government.
The apprenticeships span a wide range of roles, including Youth Support Work, Finance, Highways and Engineering, Vehicle Maintenance, Business Administration, Production Chef and more – with levels ranging from Level 2 to Level 5.
The application window is now open and will close at midnight on Sunday 8 June 2025. Interested candidates can apply online at careers.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/apprenticeships.
Building on the success of an earlier recruitment drive at the start of the year, the council is launching this new round of apprenticeship opportunities to welcome even more local talent.
Many successful applicants go on to secure permanent roles with the council, building rewarding and long-term careers in local government.
Former business administration apprentice, Lexie Steel, is among those who have successfully secured a full-time role with the council.
Lexie said:
“My apprenticeship gave me the chance to learn new skills, gain experience, and work with a supportive team. I’m proud to now be part of Westmorland and Furness Council and look forward to continuing my career here. It’s been an amazing journey, and I would encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to apply!”
The council’s dedicated Apprenticeship Team is available to answer questions from anyone interested in starting an apprenticeship, as well as parents and carers. The team can be contacted at 01539 713434 or via email at apprentice@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk.
They will also be hosting an online information session at 5:30pm on Monday 2 June for anyone interested in finding out more about the roles on offer and how to apply. To learn more and access the joining link, visit careers.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/apprenticeships.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Skills said:
“Apprenticeships continue to be a brilliant way to gain hands-on experience, earn while you learn, and take that important first or next step in your career. We’re proud to have already supported over 65 apprentices since becoming a new council in April 2023 – with the vast majority coming from our local communities.
“We’re committed to helping people of all ages develop the skills they need for meaningful employment close to home. Whether you’re leaving education, exploring a new direction, or returning to the world of work, these opportunities are designed to help you unlock your potential.”
