Council offering junior tennis coaching sessions this May half-term

Castle Park Tennis Courts in Penrith

Junior tennis coaching sessions are back at Penrith Castle Park this May half-term.

Westmorland and Furness Council is running junior tennis coaching sessions on Wednesday 28 May and Thursday 29 May at Penrith Castle Park for children aged 4-12.

The coaching will be delivered over the two days by a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Level 2 qualified coach.

Sessions cost £12 and this includes a 1-hour lesson on each day.

Session times are the same each day as follows:

  • 10.00am – 11.00am – ages 4-7
  • 11.00am – 12.00pm – ages 8-12

All equipment is provided, and sessions are suitable for beginner and novice tennis players.

Pre-booking is required due to limited places being available. For details and bookings, visit the Penrith Castle Park ClubSpark website.

The Penrith Castle Park all-weather tennis courts are open to the public year-round from 8am to 10pm. The four courts offer floodlights and movement sensor lamps on park footpaths to allow play during darker hours. Access is controlled via a smart gate and passcode, ensuring the security of the facilities.

Free Park Tennis sessions are also on offer by Penrith Tennis Club every Saturday at 10am to ensure everyone has the opportunity to play. Sessions are led by members of the Club with all equipment provided so anyone can come along to give tennis a try or get tips for improving their game.

Councillor Virginia Taylor, Cabinet Member for Planning, Culture and Community Wellbeing, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for children of all ages and abilities to have some fun, pick up new skills, or simply enjoy giving tennis a go - whether they’re complete beginners or already keen players.

“Supporting healthy, happy lives is a top priority for the council, and access to sport - from local clubs to quality facilities – is a big part of that. These award-winning courts are a brilliant asset for the town, and I hope these sessions spark a real passion and sense of enjoyment in our young people.

“Getting active in their free time not only boosts physical and mental wellbeing, but also helps build valuable life skills like resilience, teamwork and confidence.”
