This Recycle Week residents are encouraged to ‘foil in love’ with recycling thanks to a new campaign hoping to help turn everyday foil into something new while also helping to save energy and resources.
Westmorland and Furness Council is launching a new four-week campaign alongside Alupro to help its residents ‘foil in love’ with recycling. Launching this week during this year’s Recycle Week (22 to 28 September), the campaign will focus on helping people to recycle more aluminium foil.
Foil is a simple everyday item that is endlessly recyclable and makes a big difference when it’s put in the right bin or container. Recycling it isn’t something new, but it is one of the simplest actions we can all take. Foil is part of our everyday lives, from food packaging to drinks cans, and because it’s such a common material, we all have the chance to make a real impact by either starting to recycle it or recycling even more of it.
This campaign is about showing just how easy it is, helping people build small changes into their routines that add up to a big difference. Every piece of foil that’s recycled can come back again as something new – from bicycles and drinks cans to parts for cars – all while saving energy and valuable resources along the way.
Items that can be recycled at home include foil food trays and takeaway containers, kitchen foil, aluminium pot lids and wrappers, drinks cans, and screw top lids from wine bottles.
Wipe or dip trays in washing-up water to remove crumbs or food residue, scrunch kitchen foil, lids and wrappers together into a ball (the bigger the better) and leave screw tops on jars and wine bottles. If you’re unsure, try the scrunch test: scrunch your foil into a ball, and if it stays scrunched it can be recycled. If it springs back, it needs to go in the bin.
Councillor Giles Archibald, Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity, and Environmental Services, said:
“Recycling is one of the simplest ways we can all make a positive impact on the environment. Aluminium is endlessly recyclable, and every tray, wrapper or drinks can you put in the right bin or container helps to save energy, reduce waste and protect valuable resources. We hope that over the next four weeks, people see just how easy it is and create or build on a recycling habit that lasts a lifetime.”
