Applications are now open for the 2026 UK Youth Parliament Elections in Westmorland and Furness.
Westmorland and Furness Council has one MYP (Member of Youth Parliament) seat available for UK Youth Parliament and three Deputy MYP posts. Successful candidates will represent young people from April 2026 to March 2028.
Young people who live in Westmorland and Furness and are UK residents can put themselves forward to be the voice of young people locally and nationally. Local Schools will have the application packs during Parliament Week: 24-30 November.

Councillor Janet Battye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said:

I would urge you to step forward, as being an MYP can give you many new experiences, a chance to meet new people, gain confidence, and ensure the voice of young people is heard not only in Westmorland and Furness but also on the national stage."
Candidates must:
- Be 11–18 years old (if you turn 19 during your term, you must stand down).
- Commit to a two-year term of office.
- Be a member of Westmorland and Furness Youth Council or agree to join once your application is submitted.
While no formal qualifications are required, you should:
- Take responsibilities seriously.
- Have an interest in issues affecting young people.
- Listen to and respect others’ views.
- Speak your mind confidently.
- Ask for support when needed.
- Be committed, lively, and fairly confident.
Being an MYP is not about party politics—it’s about understanding issues facing young people and making improvements. The role requires time and effort, including:
- Attending regional UKYP conventions.
- Participating in the Annual Sitting (UK location varies).
- Meeting decision-makers at Westmorland and Furness Council.
- Hosting monthly meetings with youth councils and forums.
- Attending the House of Commons event.
