Local communities joined together in Carleton Park, Penrith, to celebrate the official opening of a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).
The new facility features an anti-slip tarmac surface with basketball hoops, football goals, benches and clear line markings for football, basketball, hockey, and handball.
Measuring 25 by 15 metres, the all-weather MUGA has been designed for use all year round, providing a safe and accessible space for everyone to stay active and enjoy outdoor recreation in the heart of the community.
Westmorland and Furness Council has worked together with Penrith Town Council to support the dedicated and community-led Carleton Park Recreation Committee to turn their vision into a reality.
The dedicated committee secured funding from Westmorland and Furness Council’s 0–19 Fund and the Community Fund, Penrith Town Council, Penrith Lottery, Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust and the Hadfield Trust to deliver the now completed improvements.
Robert Walker MBE, Chair of the Carleton Park Recreation Committee, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to see the completion of our final community project. This moment marks not just the end of a chapter, but a powerful reminder of what a committed community group can achieve when supported by a forward-thinking council and generous funding partners.
“Over the past 15 years we’ve delivered eight projects, raising a total of £195,500. Every one of those projects has been rooted in community interaction and it’s been our privilege to ensure that local voices have shaped every step of the journey.
“This final project is a celebration of collective effort. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our funders, the council and to all committee members - past and present - who have given their time, energy, and belief in what we set out to do. I’m also deeply grateful to the many individuals who have supported me personally along the way.
“On a personal note, I’ve found immense joy in this role. As someone who is neurodivergent, I’ve faced challenges, but I’ve also had the opportunity to demonstrate that with understanding and support, great things can be achieved. I hope this journey stands as an example of what’s possible when inclusion and community spirit come together.”
Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Active Wellbeing, Councillor Vicky Hughes, said: “It is a great pleasure to join residents, representatives from the Carleton Park Recreation Committee and Penrith Town Council in celebrating the opening of this fantastic new Multi-Use Games Area.
“This project is a shining example of true community power in action. The dedication and determination of the Carleton Park Recreation Committee have been instrumental in creating this wonderful facility that will benefit people of all ages for years to come.
“We’re proud to have supported the community in delivering on their ambitions and helped to transform this space into something that everyone can enjoy. It’s been inspiring to see what can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision and I look forward to seeing how this Multi-Use Games Area will continue to encourage people to play games in the fresh air.”
Penrith Town Councillor Deb Holden, Penrith Carleton Ward, said: “The new Carleton Park MUGA is a fantastic addition to our community and a real example of what can be achieved when we work together.
“My heartfelt thanks go to Rob Walker for his dedication, to Polly Straker and Westmorland and Furness Council for their support and to all our funders for making this project possible.
“This has been a true community effort and I’m proud to see it completed for the people of Carleton.”
