Shape the future of pump tracks in Westmorland and Furness

Outdoor pump track

A new survey has been launched today inviting residents of all ages and abilities to share their views on pump tracks and the role they could play in local communities across Westmorland and Furness.

The survey is part of planned engagement by Westmorland and Furness Council with pop-up pump track events taking place throughout May in Kendal, Penrith and Dalton-in-Furness.

Everyone is encouraged to take part – online, on paper, or in person at the events – to help inform the future of permanent pump tracks across the area.

Complete the survey online. The survey closes 31 May 2025.

Councillor Virginia Taylor, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said:

“This is a real opportunity for communities to influence future investment in active, outdoor spaces. You don’t need to be a seasoned rider, or even attend the events - we’re keen to hear all views, from young people, parents, and local residents. The more feedback we get, the better we can understand demand and plan spaces for the future that work for everyone.

“These pop-up pump tracks are a fun, free way to improve your skills, try something new, and spend time outdoors with friends or family. They’re only here for a short time, so we’re encouraging everyone to come along, have a go, and take the opportunity to tell us what they think.”

Pump tracks are looped circuits designed for bikes, scooters, and skateboards, offering a safe, inclusive and fun way to stay active outdoors. The pop-up events will help gauge local interest, with feedback gathered through the survey helping to inform the future of permanent facilities.

The pop-up events will take place as follows:

  • Saturday 3 (11am-6pm) and Sunday 4 May (11am-3pm) – Sandylands Park, Kendal
  • Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May (11am-7pm) – Penrith Leisure Centre
  • Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 May (10am-4pm) – Dowdales School, Dalton-in-Furness

Different sized bikes and helmets will be available to use each day during these hours, with people encouraged to bring their own equipment where possible.

Riders must take responsibility for their own safety abiding by the track rules. All riders must wear a helmet at all times when on the track and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
