As Remembrance Sunday approaches, the Cumbria Lieutenancy is proud to support the Veterans’ Oaks Project - a county-wide campaign inviting communities to plant oak trees as living memorials to all those affected by war, both military and civilian.

Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the “oak anniversary”, the project encourages people across Cumbria to take part in a symbolic act of remembrance that also looks to the future and work for peace.

Each tree planted represents resilience, hope, and peace - a way of honouring those who served, those who suffered, and those who continue to be affected by conflict, while also helping to nurture nature and community wellbeing.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott, said:
“The Veterans’ Oaks Project is a meaningful way for our communities to come together, not only to remember the past, but to look forward with hope. Each oak tree planted stands as a lasting symbol of strength, endurance, and unity, reflecting the spirit of those who lived through war and the generations who have followed.”

The Lieutenancy is encouraging schools, community groups, veterans’ associations, faith groups, and residents to take part by planting native oak trees in places that matter to them- from village greens and school grounds to care homes, churches, and private gardens.

Alongside remembrance, the project supports biodiversity and climate action, linking heritage with the environment. By planting trees, communities will be contributing to both the county’s living memory and its natural future.

“[This project] connects remembrance with renewal,” added [Julia Aglionby – Executive Director, Foundation for Common Land]. “It’s about caring for people, place, and planet - a shared act of reflection and hope that everyone can take part in.”
