Westmorland and Furness pays tribute on Remembrance Sunday 2025

Tim Farron MP; Chair of Westmorland and Furness Council, Cllr Doug Rathbone; Linda Jones, Chief Legal and Monitoring Officer and Lead Officer for the Armed Forces; Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Richard Sutton; and Deputy Lieutenant, Sam Rayner, all attending the Remembrance Sunday event in Kendal.

Residents across Westmorland and Furness came together on Remembrance Sunday (9 November) to honour the courage, service and sacrifices of our Armed Forces.

Commemorative services and gatherings were held in towns and villages throughout the area, with councillors and senior council officers attending to pay their respects.

In Barrow, Chief Executive Sam Plum represented Westmorland and Furness Council, laying a wreath alongside Cllr Bill McEwan, Armed Forces Champion for the Barrow area.

In Kendal, Cllr Doug Rathbone, Chair of Westmorland and Furness Council, laid a wreath with Linda Jones, Chief Legal and Monitoring Officer and Lead Officer for the Armed Forces. 

In Penrith, Cllr Michael Eyles, Armed Forces Champion for the Eden area, was joined by Paul Robinson, Director of Enabler Services, to lay a wreath on behalf of the council.

Cllr Mark Rudhall, Deputy Chair, attended the County Memorial Service at Rickerby Park in Carlisle.

Additionally, Council Leader Cllr Jonathan Brook attended the Remembrance Service in Natland. Cllr Vicky Hughes, Cabinet Member for Planning, Active Wellbeing and the Armed Forces, attended the Remembrance Service in Burton-in-Kendal where she laid a wreath, and also laid a wreath at Holme. Cllr Suzanne Pender, Armed Forces Champion for the South Lakes area, attended the service in Coniston.

Cllr Vicky Hughes, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Active Wellbeing and the Armed Forces, said:

“Remembrance Sunday is always a deeply moving day for our communities.

“Across Westmorland and Furness, people came together to reflect, to honour and to ensure the sacrifices of our Armed Forces are never forgotten. Thank you to everyone who joined us in remembrance.”
