Residents are advised that a yellow weather warning for high winds has been issued due to Storm Amy.

The storm is expected to bring a spell of very strong winds in Cumbria from 6pm on Friday until 6pm on Saturday.

Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely for many areas and may reach 60 to 70mph in some places for a time.

The very strong winds will also be accompanied by spells of heavy rain.

The council's highways teams are preparing for potential wind-blown trees and other debris which may affect roads across the authority.

Other potential effects of high winds could be:

  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen;
  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible;
  • Disruption to council services such as waste and reycling collections;
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage;
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties;
  • Fallen trees and other damage to our parks, public buildings and open spaces;
  • Some roads and bridges may close;
  • Road, rail, and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.
