Westmorland and Furness Council has today confirmed that Miranda Cannon has officially started in post as Chief Executive, following her appointment being agreed by Full Council in October 2025.
As Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service, Miranda will provide organisational leadership for the council, working with elected members and partners to ensure the council continues to operate effectively and deliver services for residents, businesses and communities across Westmorland and Furness.
Miranda joins the council from Salford City Council, where she was Executive Director of Resources and Transformation, leading major programmes of work focused on prevention and early help, improving access to services, strengthening organisational systems and introducing new ways of working. She has also held a number of senior leadership roles at Leicester City Council, giving her broad experience across complex local government services and governance.
Having grown up in the region and now living close by, Miranda brings both extensive senior local government experience and a strong personal connection to the area. She has previously described leading Westmorland and Furness Council as a privilege and has emphasised her commitment to serving the area with clarity, partnership and a strong focus on delivery.

In her first weeks, Miranda will be spending time visiting teams across the council, meeting partners and gaining a detailed understanding of local services and priorities.
