Westmorland and Furness Council have launched a new early‑years resource aimed at helping families enjoy simple, meaningful activities that support children’s development. The ‘50 Things to Do Before You’re 5’ sheet brings together a range of free or low‑cost ideas designed to encourage play, exploration, and quality family time.

You can find a downloadable PDF on the Family Help website.

Parents with new babies will automatically receive a paper copy from their Health Visitors. The resource is also available in Family Hubs, libraries, and through childcare providers, and can be downloaded directly from the council’s website

The ideas focus on everyday moments that can sometimes be lost in the busyness of modern life — from outdoor adventures and sensory play to creative activities that help children learn through experience.

Councillor Janet Battye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:
This is all about celebrating the simple joys of childhood. ‘50 Things to Do Before You’re 5’ gives families quick, affordable ideas they can enjoy together while helping children grow, learn and explore. We’re delighted to launch something so positive, practical and fun for families across Westmorland and Furness.”

Mil Vasić, Director of Children’s Services, added:
“We have launched ‘50 Things to Do before you’re 5’ because we know early experiences play a vital role in children’s development, and this is a fantastic way to support families in making the most of those early years. Our Family Hubs and partners will be championing ‘50 Things’ across the area, and we encourage all staff, services and partners to help share it widely.”

Families can find regular inspiration and activity ideas by following their local Family Hubs on Facebook, South Lakeland, Eden, and Barrow‑in‑Furness.

Family Hub staff will also share copies at community events they run or attend.
