Crosthwaite C.E. Primary School – Cleaner
12.5 hours per week - Term time only (Required as soon as possible)
The Governors of Crosthwaite C.E. Primary School wish to appoint a reliable, hardworking and friendly Cleaner to help us keep our school clean, welcoming and safe. We are a small Church of England primary school in the Lyth Valley, on the southern edge of the Lake District, with approximately 110 pupils across four mixed-age classes from Rising 3’s through Year 6.
In a school of our size this is a genuinely valued role. The person who cleans our building is part of the team, known to staff and children and makes a real difference to how the school feels each morning.
The post
Hours 12.5 hours per week - 2.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday
Pattern Late afternoon / early evening, approximately (3.30pm – 6.00pm). Flexibility on start and finish times is possible.
Contract Term time only
Salary Westmorland and Furness Grade 5, SCP 6, £25,989 per annum full-time equivalent (£13.47 per hour), pro rata for actual hours worked. Salary subject to any national or local pay award.
Start As soon as possible following interview and pre-employment checks.
A second post is also available. We are separately advertising a School Cook post of 22.5 hours per week, term time only. The two posts have been held together in the past and work well as a combined role of 35 hours per week. If you would like to be considered for both, please say so in your application - you are equally welcome to apply either of the posts alone.
Main duties
• Clean classrooms, the hall, corridors, offices, toilets and shared areas to a consistently high standard - sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting and wiping down surfaces as appropriate;
• Clean and sanitise toilets, washbasins and other high-contact points, including door handles, light switches and handrails;
• Empty bins and manage waste and recycling appropriately;
• Work through an agreed cleaning schedule, including periodic deep-cleaning tasks during the school day cycle and in holiday periods where applicable;
• Use cleaning products and equipment correctly and safely, in line with COSHH requirements and manufacturers’ instructions;
• Keep the cleaning store tidy, monitor stock levels of materials and report when supplies are needed;
• Report any damage, defects, spillages or hazards to the school office promptly;
• Secure the building at the end of the shift where required - locking up, closing windows and setting the alarm (training will be provided);
• Work within the school’s health and safety and safeguarding policies at all times.
What we are looking for
Essential:
• A conscientious, thorough approach and pride in doing a job properly;
• Reliability - our school needs to be ready every morning, and this is a post where turning up matters;
• The ability to work independently, manage your own time and get through the schedule without close supervision;
• A basic understanding of safe working practices, or a willingness to be trained (training provided);
• Physical fitness for the practical demands of the role;
• A friendly, respectful manner with staff, children and visitors and discretion about anything seen or heard in school;
• Sympathy with the Christian ethos and the core values of our school.
Desirable:
• Previous cleaning experience, in a school or another setting;
• Awareness of COSHH and safe use of cleaning chemicals;
• Experience of key-holding and building security.
What we offer
• A small, friendly school in a beautiful Lake District setting, where every member of staff genuinely matters;
• A supportive team who are closely involved in the day-to-day life of the school;
• Full induction and training, including health and safety and safeguarding;
• Local Government Pension Scheme membership.
Safeguarding
Crosthwaite C.E. Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an Enhanced DBS disclosure, satisfactory references, an online search, and pre-employment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
