Kendal Riverside South, Kendal

We’re developing a scheme to install an active travel route through the town centre and along the River Kent.

Status: Preliminary design
Funding: Active Travel Fund 4 (ATF4)
Policy Framework: Kendal Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP)

Project description

Our Kendal Riverside South active travel scheme provides a 1.3km walking, cycling and wheeling route. The route will pass through the centre of Kendal, following existing roads and footpaths adjacent to the River Kent.

The route will provide the most direct access through the town centre for active travel. It links Stramongate and Wildman Street to the north, with access to Kendal Railway Station. To the south, it links to Lound Road, with onward links to Oxenholme Railway Station and Natland.

We received funding from the government's Active Travel Fund 4 to develop designs at a preliminary level.

We've provisionally secured funding to construct part of the scheme. The funding is provided by the government's Levelling Up Fund (LUF) and the Heart of Kendal LUF project. The funding is for the section of the riverside path between Riverside Cafe and Abbot Hall Park only.

We've not yet secured funding to construct the remaining sections of the scheme.

Timescales

We completed the preliminary design in September 2024.
