Find out about our changes to amend the existing parking restrictions within Cartmel village.
We introduced traffic and parking restrictions in Cartmel village in October 2017. Our aim was to improve traffic flow and road safety by formalising and restricting parking arrangements in the area.
Our Highways Officers carried out an extensive review of the scheme after implementation. We received feedback about the scheme from Allithwaite and Cartmel Parish Council. We also received comments from Westmorland and Furness councillors.
Our findings and this feedback led us to propose improvements to the existing scheme. We carried out an initial consultation about the changes in November 2023. We invited all affected stakeholders across the village to give their views on the changes.
We’ve considered the feedback from the initial consultation. We've also had further discussions with the Parish Council and with the Westmorland and Furness councillors. We now propose to make changes to the parking restrictions in the following locations:
There are two changes for Market Square.

At the meeting of the South Lakeland Locality Board held on Thursday, 16 October 2025 at 6.00 pm at District Council Chamber - Kendal Town Hall - Lowther Street, Kendal, LA9 4DQ, it resolved that (1) Having taken into account the representations which were received during the statutory consultation and advertisement period, and having also taken into consideration the matters contained in Section 122(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 which are more specifically referred to at paragraph 9.1 of the Report, that the ‘Westmorland and Furness Council (Various Roads, Cartmel) (Consolidation of Traffic regulations) Order 20 ><’ be brought into operation as advertised.
