If your access from your drive to the road is regularly blocked you can apply to have a white 'H' bar keep clear marking painted on the road.
There is a charge for this service, which is currently £206.00, this cost is reviewed yearly by the Authority.
Please note: These markings are advisory, therefore we are unable to undertake enforcement action against anyone found to be parking on them. If a person has blocked your driveway and is preventing your access, the police may be able to help. You can report this on the Cumbria Constabulary website.
When you can apply
You can only apply for white 'H' bar markings if:
- you have an existing dropped kerb installed to Highway Authority standards
- it is a driveway which leads to a place to where a vehicle can be stored completely off the road
- the driveway is shared by more than one property and where all owners are in agreement
How to apply
Please complete the 'White 'H' bar marking' application form (DOC, 63KB).
Send your application to us using our online highways enquiry form.
Please include with your application:
- proof of address
- copy of council tax bill
- utility bill - photographic evidence of obstruction taking place
- information about how often this happens, for example how many times in a month
Payment
When we receive the application form we will send you an invoice for £206.00 inc VAT, with payment instructions.
Payment covers assessment of the application including any site visits to verify the extent and nature of any obstruction.
The payment is non-refundable if your application is refused.
What happens next
Once we have received payment we will:
- inspect the site and check if it is safe and practical to provide the road marking
- tell you if your application has been successful
- give a rough timescale for when the road marking work will be carried out
If approved the new ‘H’ bar road marking will be installed by our road marking contractor when other road marking works are planned to take place in the same area. This means there may be a delay between accepting an application and the marking being installed.
Please note: Any future maintenance of the marking will be carried out by us and in order to ensure your access is kept clear please don't let visitors to your property park on the marking, we will remove any markings that are found to be being misused.
