Councillor allowances

Recommendations from the independent remuneration panel for councillor allowances.

Councillors are not paid a salary for their work, but they do receive an annual  Basic Allowance to cover the time that they put in to their role and, in some cases, also  a Special Responsibility Allowance for particular roles which carry additional responsibilities, such as the Leader of the Council.

They can also claim for certain expenses which arise from their approved duties as a councillor, such as meals and travel expenses.

The level of allowances each year is recommended by the Independent Remuneration Panel, which is made up of members of the public. The panel members are appointed for a limited term.

On 20 April 2023 Council considered a report from the Independent Remuneration Panel and resolved to adopt the Members Allowance Scheme for 2023/24 (PDF 205KB / 13 pages).
