Your appointment for registering a stillbirth

How we arrange your appointment to register a stillbirth.

Where to register the stillbirth

If baby was still-born in Westmorland and Furness (this was previously Eden, South Lakeland and Barrow) you can register the stillbirth with Westmorland and Furness Registration Service Registration Service.

If baby was still-born in Cumberland (this was previously Copeland, Allerdale or Carlisle areas) you can register the stillbirth with Cumberland Registration Service.

If you’re unsure which new Council area you need to contact please use our handy tool to find out.

Alternatively you can do a declaration of a stillbirth at any other office in England and Wales (remember this now includes if a death which happened in Cumberland and you want to register in an office in Westmorland and Furness or vice versa) but you won’t be given any documents. The details will be passed to us and we will do the registration and issue your certificates at a later date. This can slow down the process.

If baby was still-born outside Westmorland (including in Cumberland) you can register in the local office in England and Wales or you can do a declaration in Westmorland and Furness. We will then send the information to the relevant office and they will register. You will then need to contact the relevant office for Certificates.

How to register the stillbirth

If the stillbirth took place in Westmorland and Furness, we will be in touch within 48 hours of receiving your details to make an appointment for you to attend one of our offices to register.

You do not need to provide us with any medical documents, as the medical professional who was present at the stillbirth will send them to us.

If you do receive a paper copy of the still-birth medical certificate from the medical professional, please ask them to send it directly to us with contact details for the person who will be registering.

When to register the stillbirth

Stillbirths in England and Wales should normally be registered within 42 days of the stillbirth.

Should the stillbirth not be registered within the 42 days, please contact us and we will support and guide you through the process. Any stillbirths registered after 12 months will need to be authorised by the Registrar General for England and Wales.
