Festival safety

Festivals can be an amazing experience for young people. Staying safe can be easy by being prepared and following some handy tips.

Festivals can be an unforgettable experience for young people - music, friends, freedom and fun all rolled into one. Whether it’s a day event or a weekend camp-out, festivals offer a chance to explore independence and make lasting memories. But with big crowds, unfamiliar settings and long days, it’s important to stay safe and be prepared.

Why preparation matters

Being ready for a festival doesn’t mean spoiling the fun - it means making sure your teen can enjoy themselves confidently and responsibly. A little planning goes a long way in helping them stay safe, healthy and connected.

Top tips for festival safety

Here are some practical ways to help your teen prepare for a safe and enjoyable festival experience:

  • pack smart – include essentials like sun cream, water bottle, snacks, portable phone charger, hand sanitiser and any medications
  • stay hydrated – encourage regular water breaks, especially in hot weather or when dancing for long periods
  • know the layout – check maps and meeting points in case they get separated from friends
  • keep valuables secure – use a zipped bag or bum bag and avoid bringing expensive items
  • plan communication – agree how and when to check in, and make sure phones are charged
  • look out for each other – stick with friends, especially when moving through crowds or heading back to tents
  • ask them to be a friendly face in the crowd - if they see someone they don't know who looks like they are struggling or needs some help ask if they are ok. If they see someone alone and unconscious alert a steward or member of the event staff
  • be substance aware – talk openly about alcohol and drugs, including peer pressure and how to say no
  • trust instincts – if something feels wrong, encourage them to move away and seek help
  • know where to get help – point out first aid tents, security staff and welfare areas
  • rest and recharge – remind them to take breaks, eat regularly and get some sleep if it’s an overnight event

Supporting independence

Festivals can be a great opportunity for teens to practise decision-making and responsibility. Let them take the lead in planning, but stay involved with guidance and support. Open conversations about safety, boundaries and expectations help build trust and confidence.
