Physical medical difficulties
The Physical and Medical Needs Service work with children and young people, aged 5 to 25 years, in mainstream schools. Their work helps children and young people with physical and medical needs to flourish, be happy, included and achieve.
They offer high quality and timely support and advice about a range of physical needs and medical conditions. Referrals come from schools or health professionals such as the Children's Occupational Therapy Service or the Children's Physiotherapy Service.
Advice
The service can give advice on the following:
- transition
- specialist and adapted equipment
- making school buildings and the curriculum accessible
- different technology to support inclusion
- wellbeing and social inclusion
- risk assessments
- school trips and residentials
- fatigue plans
- adaptive teaching, teaching strategies and resources
The service can also:
- attend and contribute to Annual Review
- contribute to short term targets
- liaise with you, other professionals and school staff
Physical and medical needs
Your child may have physical and/or medical difficulties. The service works with children and young people who have difficulties in the following areas:
- specific physical and medical conditions
- fatigue management
- barriers in school that make it difficult to access the social and/or academic curriculum
- movement around school
- fine motor skills (handwriting, pencil control, and scissor skills)
- gross motor skills (physical education and co-ordination)
- self-help skills (continence issues, dressing)
