Westmorland and Furness Council is marking the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day today (15 August) by flying the VJ Day flag in Barrow, Kendal and Penrith.
The occasion pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East during the Second World War and recognises the vital contributions of today’s Armed Forces community.
Flags are proudly flying from the town hall buildings as a mark of respect for veterans, serving personnel and their families.
A VJ Day Service of Thanksgiving, organised by Barrow Town Council, will take place at St James’ Church in Barrow at 6.00pm this evening.
Westmorland and Furness Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2023, pledging to ensure that those who serve, or have served, and their families are treated fairly and not disadvantaged by their military service.
The council’s commitment has been acknowledged with the prestigious Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award, highlighting its ongoing efforts to create meaningful opportunities for military personnel and veterans.
