English as an Additional Language (EAL) network

An EAL network has been set up to help providers share good practice and help schools support each other.

The EAL Network hold virtual meetings every term and they enable informal professional development. During each session there are:

• opportunities to ask questions
• share resources
• discuss challenges
• discuss pupils whilst maintaining their anonymity

The aims of the EAL network include:

• helping staff to support EAL learners
• developing supportive clusters of schools to share good practice
• supporting all EAL learners to meet their full potential
• ensuring equality of provision for all learners

The EAL Network meetings cover a range of joint work, including:

• developing an EAL policy
• developing as an EAL Coordinator/Lead person
• meeting the needs of EAL learners
• induction processes for newly arrived learners
• monitoring and assessment
• meeting the needs of advanced learners of EAL
• supporting learners in EAL development
• scaffolded support for use in various curriculum areas
• how parents can use home language to support development EAL
