Speech and Language - information for families
How we communicate
Children start to develop their communication skills from the moment they are born. They all develop at their own pace. Communication is complex and some children can find it difficult.
Communication is about sharing messages. Adults are vital in helping children with their communication skillset. These skills can look different depending on individual children’s preferences.
What children need to develop communication
There are many skills involved in communication. We like to imagine these skills developing a bit like a tree growing. In order for the skills we see in the branches and leaves to develop, we need our roots to be nurtured.
To help the tree grow we need to water it with lots of experiences and opportunities in the environment. Some children need more help from the watering cans than others to reach their potential.
If you think a child in your setting might have a speech, language or communication need you can find out more information in the sections below. In each section we’ll discuss different experiences and opportunities that can help children be a confident communicator.
