Finalising an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
After the Education, Health and Care (EHC) Needs Assessment has been completed
Once the Local Authority (LA) has completed the EHC Needs Assessment they will decide if it is necessary to issue an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP.) If it is agreed that an EHCP should be issued, the LA will draft and issue a proposed EHCP.
You will have 15 days to review the proposed EHCP. During this time, you will have chance to:
- make any amendments to the content
- make any suggestions that you would like to be added
- think about your preference for a school or setting for your child
To fund all or some of the provision in the EHCP you may want to request a Personal Budget.
A final EHCP
A final EHCP establishes the rights for your child. Once the LA have consulted with you and your child about the draft EHCP, the LA must finalise the EHCP.
Once the EHCP is finalised you will receive a copy and a copy will be sent to the named school or setting.
The final EHCP will name the type and name of the school or college for your child. Once the school has been named in the EHCP, the school or college must admit your child and put the educational provision into place.
Once you have received your child's final EHCP
Once your child's EHCP is finalised, their school or setting:
- must put in place the special educational provision described in the EHCP
- use all of the information in the EHCP to develop an Individual Educational Plan (IEP)
The IEP will describe what your child’s school or setting needs to do to make sure your child reaches the longer-term outcomes in the EHCP.
The school or setting should:
- discuss these with you and your child
- meet with you at least once a term to discuss your child’s progress
